Eufrásia Teixeira Leite between finance and fashion

ABSTRACT

This article aims to point out in the biography of Eufrásia Teixeira Leite her condition as a celibate woman, and the stigma that this state represented in the context of the 19th century. It seeks to interpret the role of fashion in the process of empowerment experienced by Eufrásia. Her story permeates questions about individuality and collectivity, financial independence and romantic love, conformity and insubmission. The investigation is based on the interpretation of two of her portraits and on the analysis of her collection of costumes belonging to the Casa da Hera Museum, to demonstrate that Eufrásia used fashion as an instrument of distinction, despite her situation as a celibate woman.
