First Republic and Vargas Era: reflections for understanding today

ABSTRACT

The reviewed work is the second volume of the New Studies in the Economic History of Brazil Collection and is dedicated to thinking about the complex period that goes from the First Republic to the end of the Vargas era. His articles express this complexity by dialoguing with the set of dynamics of the capitalist system that marked the world economy in the period, in addition to proposing reflections that inevitably bring us to the problems of the present. From the coffee culture and from the effects resulting of it to the prohibition of waitresses to work at night, its problems invite us to think about the accumulation process in Brazil, its peculiarities and what we are.
