The conservatism in the liberal-developmentalism of Roberto Campos

ABSTRACT

Roberto de Oliveira Campos was a prominent character in Brazil during the second half of the 20th century. He played an important role as head of public institutions such as BNDE and Itamaraty, he was minister of planning and senator. His ideas had great repercussion in civil society at that time. The purpose of this article is to discuss the conservative side of Roberto Campos’ liberal-developmentalism. Our hypothesis is that his view of State planning and intervention was consistent with the author’s use of economic orthodoxy. In order to debate it, this paper will present an interpretation of the author’s opinions using his own contribution (it will emphasize the period from 1955 to 1964) as well as other authors’ who analyzed Roberto Campos’ thoughts.
