A role to negotiate: women in Argentine art criticism (1981-2003)

ABSTRACT

The return of democracy in 1983 brought about profound changes in the way of defining and exercising the activity of art critic in Argentina. If in the eighties the space of art criticism is shown as an hermetic and reduced space, dominated by a generation of critics socially aged, a second state of this space, towards the turn of the century, shows a broadening of its supports and themes, a diversification of its competencies and the social profiles associated with the activity. One of the most salient characteristics of this second state is the greater presence of women in art criticism.
