The challenge of the import substitution of western categories: Celso Furtado

ABSTRACT

The text proposes to underline important aspects of Celso Furtado´s Thought: his critique and theoretical strategy to supersede the western categories to think the economy. It covers the period when he initiates working at ECLAC in 1948 and occupies public posts in the Brazilian government until the first few months of exile due to the military coup in 1964, after which the “furtadian” structuralist conception of the economy can be enunciated. The rise of decolonial thought in the region had early on in Furtado one of its forefather´s although not always recognized.
