ABSTRACT
The review of the contribution of Gilda de Mello e Souza to the debate on Modernism is based on three axes: 1 – the analysis of the article on the precursors, who introduced some elements of modernity in Brazilian painting; 2 – the analysis of the essay dedicated to the tension between avantgarde and nationalism in the first period of modernist visual arts; 3 – the examination of some of her evaluations according to recent researches.
