Basic education and access to transexuals and travesties to higher education

ABSTRACT

This article aims to discuss how gender and sexuality debates during basic education can interfere in the access of transsexuals and transvestites to higher education, based on data obtained through research carried out by project initiatives, academic productions, organizations non-governmental organizations (NGOs), support networks or associations, as well as news on social media, in addition to governmental actions aimed at promoting equity and respect for gender identities at school. According to the proposed study, although gender and sexuality issues have gained relevance in policies and legislation that are linked both to the field of education and to other fields, transsexual and transvestite students still have difficulty completing the period of compulsory schooling. Therefore, proposing reflections and working on concepts in basic education schools is not enough, it is necessary to invest in the initial and continuing training of the entire teaching staff.
