CAMPBELL, Colin K.; JOHNSON, Elizabeth M; PHILPOT, Christine M. & WARNOCK, David W. - Identification of pathogenic fungi. London, Health Laboratory Service, 1996. 298p. illust. ISBN: 0-90114439 8

The book "Identification of pathogenic fungi" by Colin K. Campbell, Elizabeth M. Johnson, Christine M Philpot and David W. Warnock, mycologists at the Public Health Laboratory, Bristol, England, specifically deals with the study of fungi that are pathogenic to man and animals in terms of their fundamental morphobiological characteristics. In an introductory section the authors describe the various processes of conidiogenesis and the methods used for the identification of molds in general. Schematic drawings are presented for each fungal species, with the description of colony aspect, basic microscopic characteristics, the presence or absence of sexual status, as well as their clinical importance.

For the description of each species, the authors considered the following classification: molds with arthrospores, molds with aleuriospores including dermatophytes, molds with holoblastic conidia, molds with enteroblastic chain conidia, molds with enteroblastic conidia arranged in clusters, mucoraceous molds, miscelaneous fungi, and yeast identification.

A small glossary and some mycology texts conclude the present volume. In our opinion, the book is specifically destined for use in clinical laboratories interested in the identification of molds and yeasts frequently isolated from different biological materials, including opportunistic fungal agents.
