The curricularization of extension in Brazil: history, concepts and challenges

Abstract

The aim of this text is to outline the trajectory and conceptions of extension in higher education and to address the challenges related to extension as a compulsory curricular component. The article is the result of a bibliographical review, based on articles, surveys, but also the use of statistical data, a study of the legal system, with a view to a quantitative and qualitative analysis. The work consists of an introduction, followed by a reflection on the history and conceptions of extension and finally the conclusions, which deal with the challenges. The study points out that the curricularization of extension is very important in professional training and in terms of commitment to society, however, there are many challenges considering the problem of funding, guaranteeing conditions and institutional contributions, the reality of teachers and students and the issues surrounding higher education in the country such as privatization and the entrepreneurialization of education.
