This article investigates the function of the Portuguese King Duarte's (1391-1438) own experience with sadness in his work Leal Conselheiro (Loyal Counselor). The autobiographical description makes the discourse of consolation more reliable and indicates the importance of his self-analysis in his medicine of the soul.
