Psychoanalysis and homophobia: the uncanny in sexuation

In what way might the uncanny (das Unheimliche) help us locate part of what is at stake in homophobias and transphobias? Drawing upon six accounts of homophobic attacks, recovered from newspapers, we intend to make some contributions articulating the uncanny to the graph of sexuation, hence utilizing the orientation that the object a provides us with. As we discuss the collected cases, we synthesize in the following manner what seems to happen in these situations: the “faggot” is taken as a “woman” from the perspective of someone who situates himself in a “male” position. Thus, we propose two different readings: on the one hand, by irruption of something feminine that anguishes the “male” and, on the other hand, by the exposition of the fact that, deep down, the phallus is nothing but a piece of flesh that doesn't ensure the subject a virile position.

Key words:
Uncanny; homophobia; object a; phallus
