This paper reviews aspects of the Id as highlighted by Georg Groddeck and reflects on possible connections between Groddeckian, Freudian and Lacanian thinking. We emphasize Georg Groddeck’s original ideas about unconscious language and symbols in investigating psychosomatic diseases, in a constant effort to apply them to psychoanalysis. In his clinic, resistance and transference were considered decisive for the replacement of the language of disease with that of health.
