O caso clínico na instituição pública: polifonías desejantes* * Este texto é uma versão reformulada do trabalho apresentado no VI Congresso Brasileiro de Psicopatologia Fundamental, Recife, 5 a 8 de setembro de 2002.

This article discusses the device of studying clinical cases based on a psychoanalytic approach in public institutions. This is an important contemporary question, to the extent that the practice of psychoanalysis is gradually extending into other social areas, such as institutional settings. The discussion in this article is based on a central question: do clinical cases carried out in public institutions have specific characteristics? First we discuss conditions surrounding the use of clinical cases in psychoanalysis and how this approach was taken by Freud, as it served both to relieve the suffering of his patients and to develop his metapsychology. Based on the presentation of a clinical case treated in an institution, we will go into how this construction goes beyond the interface between the public and the private, to show how a listener's commitment is not based solely on the fact that the treatment is carried out in a public location, but also by the act of transmission of his or her listening.
