Oxidation resistance of a liquid phase-sintered silicon carbide

In this work, silicon carbide ceramics were developed by liquid phase sintering using AlN-Y2O3 as additive. Four compositions were obtained using beta-SiC powders and different stoichiometry and contents of AlN-Y2O3. Oxidation tests were performed at different temperatures (1200, 1300 e 1400ºC), maintaining the exposure time in 120 horas. The results were correlated with densification and sample compositions. Based on the weight gain as function of surface area, the oxidation coefficient for parabolic growth (k p) were determined. Starting to the results obtained, it was observed that the compositions presented parabolic behavior of oxidation in both compositions studied. An effective increasing of the oxidation as function of the porosity was observed. On the other hand, the stoichiometry used in the additive composition contributed in the results. Additives with high Y2O3-content presented better results with lower oxidation rates.
