Study of the production and execution of screed mortars

ABSTRACT

Screed is a layer of the floor system of a building, which consists of a mortar, usually made of cement and sand, whose main function, among many, is to regularize the surface in order to allow applying the finishing floor. This layer, which has often been neglected in construction projects and even by scientific studies in area, is currently recognized as a fundamental layer of the floor system and it requires certain properties for the proper fulfillment of its functions, especially after the implementation of NBR 15575 of housing building performance, which deals with acoustic and thermal comfort in buildings. In this context, the objective of this work is to carry out a review about the production of this mortar and the execution of the screed, highlighting the existing types, their functions, required properties and develop a constructive methodology. This study becomes necessary since there are no normative prescriptions regarding the necessary properties for the adequate performance of this mortar or for its executive parameters, which is currently carried out according to an empirical methodology and without a constructive standard. This can cause problems in the performance of the screed in service, hinder researches in the engineering area with a focus on the floor system and increase the waste of materials in a building.
