Cactaceae in the Serra da Mantiqueira, Brazil

Abstract

The Mantiqueira Mountain Range, in the Southeastern Region of Brazil, extends along the borders of the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. The present the floristic treatment for the Cactaceae occurring in the Serra da Mantiqueira. Expeditions were carried out for sampling and observation of specimens in the field, while specimens deposited in scientific collections were also analysed. The morphological analysis allowed the elaboration of descriptions, an identification key, and illustrations. We recorded 33 taxa of Cactaceae, being seven endemic to the Serra da Mantiqueira and seven threatened with extinction. Rhipsalis is the most representative genus in the area, with 14 species, while five genera are represented by only one taxon. Taxa are distributed in altitudes between 100-2,897 m.
