Flora of the state of Rio de Janeiro: Myrciaria, Neomitranthes and Siphoneugena (Myrtaceae)

Abstract

We present a taxonomic study of genera Myrciaria (5 spp.), Neomitranthes (5 spp.) and Siphoneugena (4 spp.) for the flora of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The specialized literature and collections of the main herbariums of the state were consulted, including on-line scanned images and nomenclatural types, and field expeditions were carried out for observation and collection. We present identification keys, descriptions, comments, illustrations and distribution maps for the 14 species studied. Most species occur in Dense Ombrophilous Forest, some of which are also found in Restinga vegetation. All species are found in several Conservation Units. Inflorescence and floral characteristics distinguish the genera, while the species are distinct by characteristics of the branches, leaves, inflorescences, bracts, bracteoles, calyx and number of ovules per locule. Lectotypes for Myrciaria disticha, Eugenia guaquiea and Eugenia tenella, and a new synonym (Myrciaria tenella var. elliptica), and new occurrence sites in the state of Rio de Janeiro are registered for 10 species.
