ABSTRACT
The genus Abarema embraces 49 Neotropical species, with the main center of diversity in the Amazon rain forests, followed by the Atlantic rain forest Domain. In the Rio de Janeiro state, five species were found: Abarema brachystachya, A. cochliacarpos, A. langsdorffii, A. limae, and A. villosa. They occurr in dense rain forest and restinga. The present work includes a key for the species, descriptions, illustrations, and comments regarding the morphology, taxonomy, and conservation of the species treated.
