In this paper we present a historical framework on the study of Melastomataceae taxonomy in Brazil. We also present a discussion of the circumscriptions of the taxa, and of geographic distribution of the genera, as well as the impact of new tools (like molecular markers and phylogeny) on taxonomic knowledge of the family. Finally, we discuss perspectives for future studies, also indicating some gaps that must be filled in order to improve our knowledge of the diversity of Brazilian Melastomataceae. We present an identification key for the genera occurring in Brazil.
