Abstract
Aim
To verify the existence of a relationship between dental care for pregnant women and maternal oral conditions and the health of the newborn.
Material and method
A cross-sectional study was carried out with mothers identified in a maternity hospital in the state of Minas Gerais, in which data on dental care during pregnancy, maternal oral health conditions, Apgar score of the newborn and confounding variables were collected. The data were initially analyzed descriptively and the adaptation between dental care and the Apgar score was tested using the Pearson test.
Result
Data collected from 144 postpartum women and their babies were analyzed, but no correlations were found between the Apgar score and any of the dental care, maternal and newborn variables collected in the study.
Conclusion
No correlations of the Apgar Score with any dental care variables, maternal and newborn variables were observed.
