Fluoride releasing of restorative materials

Nowadays there are several types of restorative materials with fluoride release properties. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the fluoride release from the following restorative materials, considering their different compositions. The materials used were: Chelon Fil-ESPE (CHE), Vitremer-3M (VIT), Variglass-DENTSPLY (VAR), Dyract-DENTSPLY (DYR) and Tetric-VIVADENT (TET). Six cylindrical samples (area = 1.65 cm2) of each material were prepared; each sample was then suspended individually in a plastic tube containing 2.0 mL of deionized water. The water was changed daily during 15 days. Fluoride release was determined after buffering the solution with an equal volume of TISABII. For the fluoride analysis, a fluoride electrode, Orion 96-09, and an ionalyser Orion EA 940 were used. All materials showed the same pattern of fluoride release during the 15-day experiment; the greatest fluoride release occurred during the first days and then it decreased rapidly toward a constant level. The fluoride released (mean ± standard error) in <FONT FACE="Symbol">m</FONT>g F/cm2 were: CHE = 7.62 ± 0.73A, VIT = 5.91 ± 0.79B, VAR = 2.72 ± 0.25C, DYR = 1.50 ± 0.17D, TE = 0.136 ± 0.016E. Means followed by different letters were significant (5%). The results showed that the composition of restorative materials influenced significantly the fluoride release.
