Rebounding from a fall: or how a rubber soldier ended up as an evangelical pastor

This article tells the story of a Nordestino, Braz, who went to the Amazonian state of Acre during World War II, where he became one of the first ministers of the Assembleia de Deus. Through an analysis of this narrative the article draws attention to religious discourse and practice with the social, political and economic interests of the protagonists. Although the minister explains his mission as the result of a divine calling, there can be little doubt that it is also shaped by the alliances and disputes of a more material nature.
