“Today I prayed, He is black”: the genesis of the Evangelical Black Movement in Brazil

Abstract: In this text I try to describe, in a synthetic way, the process of configuration of the Evangelical Black Movement (MNE) in the Brazilian context and the way the symbols of African heritage in Brazil are triggered in the actions of these groups. Based on documental analysis, interviews and field work, it is argued that a) it is possible to draw some general lines that guide the actions of the MNE - among them the fight against racism; b) there is a rejection of Afro-Brazilian religions as being the only locus of "black culture in Brazil" without, however, spreading discriminatory practices; c) there is a radicalization of the movement of "Africanization" initiated by some fathers and mothers of saint, to the point that Christianity is also considered a "religion of African matrix".
