Abstract: In this article, we highlight some issues that intersect with the social sciences debate on religions in quilombos by quoting a bibliographic mapping and observations from our research experience in quilombola communities in the municipality of Cachoeira, in the Recôncavo Baiano. We begin by reviewing the conceptualization of contemporary quilombos and its implications for the investigation of religions in those communities, and then map some of the challenges involved in the growing expansion of evangelicals in these groups. Finally, we problematize the issue of the "authenticity" of legitimate religious identities in the construction of quilombola ethnicity, and our position as research partners in this controversy.
