Abstract: This article discusses the limitations and usage of the secularization, laicity, and public spaces concepts applied to contemporary Brazilian politics. We analyzed discourses, qualitatively, made by political actors during television debates, public statements, and social media. We found that conservative public figures tend to mobilize and interpret laicity based on the argument of interest representation on legitimating religious presence in the State. On the other hand, progressist actors stand by the separation of church and State, granting a private competence to faith. Lastly, we pay attention to the fact that the debate over these notions must consider how actors mobilize them, given that these terms' definitions vary according to their interests and projects.
