Pluralism and movement: about Cecília Mariz's Sociology

Abstract: Here I present aspects of Cecília Mariz's sociological work, situating it in the academic context unfavorable to the sociology of religion in the 1990s. Often considered “unscientific” because they are tainted by “beliefs”, the sociological studies of religion will find in Mariz an exemplary commitment to scientific rigor supposedly lacking in them. Focusing on an article she co-authored with Roberta Campos on continuity and change in Pentecostalism, controversy prevails as a form of dialogue with diverse analytical perspectives, I would like to highlight what, in my opinion, is our author's way of thinking, underlying her work and this article specifically: the pluralism of ideas and the positive value of transformation.
