Note from the editor
This special number of SCIENTIA AGRICOLA contains a selection of original scientific manuscripts, presented at the "WORKSHOP ON SPECIAL TOPICS ABOUT SOIL PHYSICS AND CROP MODELING AND SIMULATION" held at the Agronomy Campus of the University of São Paulo, located in Piracicaba, Brazil, during 18-20 June 1997, organized by ESALQ/USP (Departments of Agriculture and of Physics & Meteorology), CENA/USP and CNPMA/EMBRAPA, Jaguariúna, SP, and coordinated by Professors Antonio Roberto Pereira and Durval Dourado Neto. This issue is dedicated to Dr. Donald Rodney Nielsen, retired professor of the University of California, Davis, the main colaborator of the workshop, as a homage to the relevant services by him performed for the development of science, especially in agronomy, and as a recognition of his brilliantt career as a university professor, considered the most outstanding one in soil science.
