Abstract
Interested in understanding Maurício de Sousa’s artistic recognition, I begin by analyzing the city of São Paulo as an important locus of artistic production for the development of an artistic community dedicated to comic books. The urban mapping of Maurício de Sousa’s trajectory illustrates the ways in which his performance within the São Paulo press was enriched by his contact with young professionals who, engaged in the broad defense of comics as an art form, tentatively spearheaded initiatives to encourage production of Brazilian comics. In this sense, I also focus on the way in which Maurício de Sousa’s social circles gave new meaning to the city of São Paulo, encouraging the establishment of a collective artistic experience.
