GABRIEL COHN AND THE SÃO PAULO SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY

Abstract

The article explores Gabriel Cohn’s formative process, sett-

ing out from his connection to the Chair of Sociology I of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Sciences of the University of São Paulo. Adopting this perspective, it seeks to understand his early theoretical production in light of the concerns of the sociologists organized at the Centre for the Sociology of Industry and Labour. In particular, it examines Cohn’s article in the collection Política e Revolução Social, his master’s degree and the article “Problemas da industrialização no século XX.” In the second part, highlighting Cohn’s growing intellectual autonomy, whose theoretical imprint can be seen in the incorporation of Frankfurtian themes in his production from the 1970s and, especially, in his book on Max Weber, the article examines Cohn’s reflections on Florestan Fernandes’s work as a key moment for the self-reflection on the intellectual tradition in which he was trained.
