Reflections about Rio + 20, the People's Summit and Public Health

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the socio-environmental crisis from a critical point of view for the Public Health. We characterized the environmental crisis as an expression of life and nature commercialization, a result of the global capitalism and the growing power of corporations that influence the development model of countries such as Brazil. We also analyze two initiatives that propose solutions for this crisis. The first one is Rio +20, which is based on eco-efficiency, green economy and models of global governance. These are the corporative interests based on solutions for the market by means of technologies and environmental management that neglect social inequalities and environmental conflicts. The other initiative is the Earth Summit, which seeks new means of knowledge production and a more supportive world model. This is based on movements of urban and rural workers, environmentalists, feminists, peoples at environmental risk, and traditional and ethnic peoples in defense of their ways of life.
