Drinking and driving: perception and risk behavior in traffic

ABSTRACT

In recent decades, rates of accidentality in Brazilian traffic stand out as a public health problem. Only in 2009 there were 37,594 people dead, and alcohol consumption appears as a major cause of these statistics. Although Brazilian law has changed making the punishment for drunk driving even more severe, morbidity and mortality rates appear to remain unchanged. For efficient public policies, it is necessary to understand how human behavior, especially the perception of risk influences the growth of statistics. The objective of this paper was to discuss theoretical aspects of risk perception and behavior in traffic and the main research findings in the area.
