The objective of this research was to analyze the risk rating at the emergency department of a hospital. We sampled 976 users who sought treatment, whose data were collected from records at forms recommended by protocol and medical care. Results showed that 20-59 year-old males, attending the service on weekdays and during business hours, were predominant 82,3% of patients were considered adequate to meet the demand in the emergency department. There was a significant association between adequacy and the variables origin and opening hours. The implementation of the protocol helped identifying the most serious cases and demand organization.
