Neonatal screening: reality of Ceará, Brazil

ABSTRACT

The article aimed to analyze the profile of the coverage of the National Neonatal Screening Program in the State of Ceará, Brazil, in 2007, by a cross-sectional, quantitative study, conducted between July and August of 2010, based on the Information System of Live Newborns, number of neonatal screening tests reported by the Central Public Health Laboratory and interview in the Reference Service of Neonatal Screening. The 184 municipalities researched are heterogeneous in their coverage. Some of them achieved coverage of over 100.00%, while 84.23% showed lower than recommended by the Ministry of Health for metabolic diseases phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism.
