ABSTRACT
This study aimed to elucidate the conception of health care for the elderly for physicians in the Family Health Strategy in city of Ceará, Brazil. A qualitative study with ten physicians was conducted through interviews. The main findings in this study were health service centered on sickness and office appointments, that focuses on chronic diseases, that provides little interaction with other health care professionals, the lack of use of the global assessment for the elderly and a negative perception of old age. The results reinforce the need for improvements in the training of primary care physicians to care for the elderly.
