Managers’ perspectives on a proposal for permanent health education in palliative care in primary care

ABSTRACT

Education can act as a transforming factor in health practice by promoting meetings between subjects, from care to management. By mediating the reality of care, the manager becomes part of the space where health and education are produced, enabling learning and the joint construction of answers to the problems inherent in the work routine. With the aim of analyzing managers’ perspectives on a proposal for permanent health education in palliative care to train physicians and nurses in primary care, a qualitative action research project was carried out in primary care in the Médio Paraíba region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Through the analysis of semi-structured interviews, conducted with eight managers and the representative of the Education-Service Integration Commission of the health region, four thematic dimensions emerged: needs, applicability, healthcare team, and access. It was identified that the educational proposal developed, by combining continuing health education and palliative care, allowed management to envision a dynamic strategy capable of transforming primary care service practices. Involving management expanded the scope of the proposed model, enhancing its adoption not only at the local level, but also as an integrated part of the healthcare network.
