Economic Transformation, external insertion and territorial dynamics at the Brazilian midwest: the case of Rio Verde

Rio Verde, a town located in Goiás State, at the heart of Brazil's Midwest region, presents great economic dynamism, led by the export agriculture business. Its high growth rate has brought into debate a series of issues regarding the meaning of its social and spatial transformation and recent urban sustainability. This makes such process a relevant topic of study, specially due to role the city has, both spatially (important center point in the sub-regional urban network of Goiás' southwest) and sector-wise (great soy and beef producer, and also one of the most important cities connected to the Brazilian agriculture business). Its intense accumulation process has locally reproduced the same urban problems observed in other areas of Brazil, all which presented changes at a similar pace, during different moments of the country's economic history.
