Violent Interactions in the Netflix Fiction TV Series “Club de Cuervos”

Abstract

This work analyzes gender differences in representation of different types of violence used by the characters of a television fiction program on a subscription video-on-demand platform service. A content analysis of the first season’s thirteen episodes of the Netflix television series “Club de Cuervos” was carried out. Two judges independently observed and codified the different categories in each episode, and also generated maps of the violent interactions the main characters of the season were engaged on, what allowed analyzing in more detail the directionality and type of violence used by and inflicted on characters. Men displayed significantly more sexist violence, intimidation, disregard and disparagement, corruption, and disloyalty than women, but women exhibited aggressive verbal and physical behavior to the same extent as men. There is an overrepresentation of men and white people in the series, which perpetuates stereotypes based on discrimination and favors violence against minorities by blurring or ignoring them. Intersectional analyzes in Mexican and Latin American series could recognize other inequalities and violence crossed by class, sex, nationality, and race.
