Translation flows between Brazil and France in Human and Social Sciences: exploratory study

Abstract

This article presents an exploratory study on the publishing markets of France and Brazil, in the area of Human and Social Sciences (HSC), based on the flows of requests for assignment of translation rights and acquisition of translation rights, between 2010 and 2022. This research aims to identify how the French publishing market is organized, and, in this market, which are the publishing houses that trade the HSC works sold in the Brazilian publishing market; the goal, then, is to identify which authors are the most sought after for assignment of rights. In a subsequent part of the research, the goal is to outline the scenario of the Brazilian publishing market in terms of assignments of translation rights. To this end, we share the initial data collected in bibliographic research and in questionnaires sent to the main actors in this market, namely, commercial publishing houses and university presses. Based on the analysis of the translation flows, the next step is to establish – with further research – which place Brazil occupies in the global field, which are the authors we import and export.
