The tortuous paths of Brazilian democracy

Abstract

This review analyses the book Brazil apart: 1964-2019, by the Marxist historian Perry Anderson, presenting an exceptional narrative of the Brazilian economic and political history of the last 35 years. Throughout our text, we examine some of the fundamental elements of the author's contribution, highlighting the influence of his theoretical position and the singularities of his interpretation. Our critique intends to demonstrate, through a process of immanent analysis, the relevance and the limits of this work, whose importance is evident in the contemporary scenario of social, political and economic crisis we are experiencing today.
