The history of the creation and application of the Special Security Disciplinary Regime in the Bangu 1 Prison, in Rio de Janeiro is analyzed with a critical eye. Vandalism and shutdowns were ordered in that city in 2002 and 2003 in protest of this policy. The resulting socio-political disorder is also examined in this study.
