Occupational factors related to Burnout syndrome components among nursing personnel

The objective of this study is to identify occupational factors associated with the three components of Burnout Syndrome among nursing workers who work in hospital care. It is a cross-sectional study carried out in a hospital located in the Serra Gaucha, RS, Brazil. Analytical statistics were applied to a sample of 164 nursing personnel. The results indicate that Burnout Syndrome components showed statistically significant associations (p<0.05) with the following occupational characteristics: work overload, lack of work motivation, conflicts of personal versus institutional values, lack of opportunity for reward, having the same task in different institutions, and the difficulty in conciliating different jobs. We conclude that maintaining adverse work conditions generates stress, forcing the employee to develop adaptive mechanisms which sometimes are not effective. Together, these factors lead to the development of Burnout Syndrome.
