This is a reflexive text that presents the hospital infection situation in the state of Mato Grosso, Brasil, relating them to geographical conditions and to nursing work. It provides a revision on hospital infection, the hospital environment, biological risks, hospital architecture and their relation to infection control and the process of nursing labor. It points to the challenges and perspectives for hospital infection control in the State, bringing forth the nurse's function as the articulating and motivating person with the know-how and the activities for such accomplishment
