The role of sister of charity Abrahíde Alvarenga in Piauí: a story to be told

This historical documentary study has the objective of relating the work of Abrahíde Alvarenga, Sister of Charity Religious Order, in Piaui. To do this, we have described the work done by Sister Abrahíde at Getúlio Vargas Hospital in the attempt to show her fight for the founding of the Maria Antoinette Blanchote School of Nursing and the Piaui branch of the Brazilian Nursing Association. The source of this information consisted of oral interviews from eyewitnesses and also from written documents and iconography. As a secondary source, specific literature from the history of nursing in Piaui and Brazil was used. The study shows that the work of Sister Abrahíde promoted an improvement in the qualification of Nursing in the state of Piaui and in its neighboring states. The opening of the above mentioned branch promoted the consciousness and mobilization of the category thus making the construction of the collective organization of nurses in Piaui possible.
