With the objective of geographically mapping the behavior of potential health risk variables and selecting the risk areas found in the region covered by the University of Vale do Itajaí, a transversal study was carried out in the urban zone of the Municipality of Itajaí, using data provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Considering the six activity areas of the municipality and using discriminating analysis, it was possible to observe the formation of three groups from different social classes. Public services offer and socioeconomic conditions were the principal variables influencing the creation of areas likely to reflect social exclusion. We believe that it is fundamental that the interventions carried out in the communiities be based on epidemiological studies aiming at detecting the sectors that deserve attention in public health policies.
