The objective of this study is to reflect upon the implementation of a nursing care model together with three women-grandmothers and their families in the breast-feeding process, in order to promote, protect, and support maternal breast-feeding in daily family life. The nursing care model was elaborated according to the Theory of Symbolic Interactionism, integrating the following instances: Defining the Daily Situation and the Care Situation; Proposing and Carrying Out Care; Rethinking Care and Daily Life. It was developed through individual and group meetings in a shared living environment and in homes in Florianópolis, SC, Brazil in November and December of 2004. The systematization of care for women-grandmothers made it possible for them to take hospital and domicile care practices to their daughters, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren in the breast-feeding process. We conclude that the care model is viable, upon systematizing care for women-grandmothers and their family members involved in the breast-feeding process.
