National sovereignty, patriotism and Brazilian identity in three monologues by Francisco Correa Vasques (1860-1865)

Abstract:

Starting from the assumption that theater was the main collective entertainment of the 19th century and functioned as a sounding board for issues that mobilized the attention of the societies in which it was inserted, the text explores the relationships between theater, national sovereignty, patriotism and Brazilian identity, a subject little addressed by Brazilian historiography. Three monologues written by Rio de Janeiro actor and playwright Francisco Correa Vasques, written, published and performed between 1860 and 1865, are used as main sources, and as additional sources texts by other playwrights and news published in Rio de Janeiro newspapers in the delimited time frame.
