Circulation of the Moriscos after the deportation from the kingdom of Granada (1570)

Abstract:

After the Morisco Revolt (1568-1570) a large part of the Moriscos of the kingdom of Granada were deported to Castile and other peninsular territories of the Hispanic Monarchy. Their removal was carried out quickly, starting before the end of the conflict, being systematized in three waves between 1569 and 1585. The deportation sparked debates about the appropriateness of spreading one of the sources of religious dissent across Spain: the Morisco community of Granada. After the distribution, it was noticed that the Moriscos in many cases tried to disobey the orders to restrict their movement, aiming to return to the kingdom of Granada or to escape to the Berberia, even in the face of strong obstacles. This article seeks to outline some aspects of the mobility of the Moriscos of Granada, based on institutional documentation, individual reports and processes, denunciations, chronicles, letters and censuses or patterns of the population.
