Among books and letters: the royal library and the writing of librarian Luís Joaquim dos Santos in the joan period (1808 -1821)

Abstract

Among books and letters, the history of the Luso-Brazilian empire underwent profound changes at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Rio de Janeiro turned into the home of the Monarchy upon the court arrival in 1808.The librarian LuísJoaquim dos Santos Marrocos saw his life turned up side down when accompanied the second wave of books from Royal Library d’Ajuda to America. He was present in setting up the Royal Library of Rio de Janeiro, now conceived as a locus of knowledge. In this context, we will study Marrocos’s active correspondence written between 1811 and 1821 by the following perspectives: the historicity of Royal Library; the relationship between Marrocos and writing; the individual and collective sensibilities of this historical moment; the political relations in which he was inserted and the dialogue with his father, Francisco José dos Santos Marrocos; the conservation of this epistolary collection. Our aim is to examine such letters as the object of study to reflecton the written culture of the political relations in the Luso-Brazilian empire.
