The censorship of the operetta “La mascotte”: debate in newspapers of the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract:

This article presents the history, read from newspapers pages, of the censorship of the operetta La mascotte, written by Henry Chivot and Alfred Duru, music by Edmond Audran, which had only one presentation, in Rio de Janeiro, that took place on May 30, 1881, staged by the company of Maurice Grau. The article is based in primary materials information that was researched in the Digital Hemeroteca platform of the Biblioteca Nacional (Rio de Janeiro). It addresses the controversy established in newspapers and magazines about the Dramatic Conservatory from this episode, outlining themes such as the problem of censorship and institutional personalism. The article aims to present a case study and not debate the institution of the Conservatory in itself.
