Historiography of Brazilian press censorship: tradition, permanence and particularities

Abstract:

Based on a bibliographical review, the article proposes to verify historical aspects of the Brazilian press in order to observe characteristics of journalism censorship in the country. The research starts from the questioning about the strategies adopted mainly by governments, observing if the actions correspond to conjunctural facts or if they are the result of a tradition, loaded with historical and cultural traits that are adaptable to different periods. As noted, censorship does not occur at exclusive moments in Brazilian history, but has accompanied journalistic activity since the beginning. The exercise seeks to establish relationships between Brazilian and Portuguese bibliography that can contribute to understanding the particularities of current journalism produced in the country.
